Exotic and Classic Car Finance Title FAQs

What is a title?

A vehicle title is a legal document that establishes ownership of a motor vehicle. It typically includes:

  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Year, make, and model of the vehicle
  • Name and address of the owner or purchaser
  • Name of the lienholder, if applicable
  • This varies by state. Some states issue the title directly to the vehicle owner, while others issue it to the lienholder. Certain states maintain electronic (paperless) titles through their Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
  • Please contact your state’s DMV to confirm how vehicle titles are managed in your state.

Maintaining an accurate title is important for several reasons:

  • If you sell your vehicle after paying off your loan, the title must be transferred to the new owner. Incorrect ownership information may delay or prevent the buyer from transferring title and registering the vehicle.
  • If your vehicle is declared a total loss following an accident, your insurance company may delay or deny payment if the title has not been properly transferred into your name.
  • Your vehicle will be titled in the state listed for the primary borrower on the loan documents.

Responsibility for titling and registration depends on your transaction:

  • If the dealer collected sales tax and registration fees as part of your purchase, the dealer is generally responsible for registering and titling the vehicle.
  • If Woodside Credit collected tax and registration fees as part of your loan, our Title Department will work with you to coordinate the title and registration process. Woodside Credit works with third-party title agencies in all 50 states.
  • Requirements vary by state.
  • Our team will email you the specific titling and registration requirements for your state shortly after your loan funds.
  • If you cannot locate this email, please contact us at [email protected]
  • Common Requirement: Power of Attorney (POA)
  • Most states require a Power of Attorney (POA) authorizing Woodside Credit to complete the title transfer on your behalf.
  • The POA must be:
  1. Original
  2. Wet-signed
  3. Notarized
  4. The completed POA must be returned to our office. Woodside Credit will provide a prepaid FedEx shipping label for the secure return of title documents.
  • Woodside Credit utilizes a third-party tax and registration system that provides an estimate of the taxes, title fees, and registration fees due for your vehicle purchase.
  • Because fees are estimated, the final amount due may differ from the amount collected at funding.
  • If an overage is collected, the excess funds will be applied directly to the principal balance of your loan.
  • If additional funds are required, you will be responsible for paying the difference. A member of our team will contact you to arrange payment by check or debit/credit card.
  • Please note that unpaid balances may delay the issuance or shipment of your registration and license plates.
  • Processing times vary by state. Please contact your state’s DMV for current processing estimates.
  • Woodside Credit will promptly submit all required title and registration documentation once all outstanding requirements have been received by you and the seller.
  • Please note that paperwork cannot be submitted until all required documents and information have been provided. Penalties accrued in your state due to a delay in documents from you or the seller are your responsibility to pay.
  • Woodside Credit is not affiliated with any state DMV and does not control DMV processing times, penalties, or have access to DMV systems.
  • Contact the DMV in your new state to update your vehicle registration and title or to obtain information regarding the transfer process.
  • The DMV will typically request the necessary documentation directly from Woodside Credit. Please provide them with the following information:
  • Email [email protected]
  • Mailing Address:

Woodside Credit

P.O. Box 12379

Newport Beach, CA 92658

  • Your title and/or lien release will be sent to the mailing address on file for the primary borrower.
  • To release the title or lien, your account must be paid in full with a zero balance. While we process lien releases promptly, please allow up to 45 days after your final payment has posted to receive your title or lien release, depending on mail delivery times and DMV processing.
  • For states with electronic (paperless) titles, Woodside Credit will electronically notify the DMV that the lien has been released. The DMV will then issue the title according to its processing timeframe, which varies by state.
  • In some states, titles remain electronic unless the vehicle owner specifically requests a paper title from the state. Please contact your local DMV for additional information.
  • If your vehicle is titled in an electronic (paperless) state, Woodside Credit will release the lien electronically and notify you once the release has been completed.
  • Your state’s DMV or motor vehicle agency will then issue a lien-free title according to its processing timeframe. Processing times vary by state.
  • Please note that certain states require titles to remain electronic unless the owner requests a paper title directly from the state.
  • Contact your state’s DMV to confirm whether your title is electronic and to obtain current processing timeframes.
  • Your title or lien release will be mailed to the address provided to us by your servicing bank. Please ensure your servicing bank has your current mailing address on file to avoid delays.
  • If your state maintains electronic (paperless) titles, Woodside Credit will release the lien directly with the DMV. In most cases, the DMV will mail the lien-free title to the registered owner’s address on file. Certain states will remain electronic within the DMV system unless a paper title is requested. You may contact your state’s DMV to request a paper title if desired.
