Secure Car Series: Most Stolen Vehicles

If you have ever had your vehicle stolen you know it is a terrible experience. If it is your daily driver then you are out transportation. If it is an investment vehicle then you are out some serious cash. Sometimes stolen vehicles are recovered, sometimes they aren’t. In the first installment of our secure car series we are going to look at a few top 10 lists: Most Stolen Vehicles, Stolen Vehicles that Police Fail to Recover, and Most Stolen Luxury Vehicles. In coming installments we will explore car theft prevention and the newest anti theft technology as well as get a few tips from a car thief – but first, let’s see what they are stealing.

Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles

This list comes from the 2015 Hot Wheels report that is published by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). It lists the vehicles that were stolen more often in 2014 as well as the total number of thefts and most common model years.

  1. Honda Accord (51,920) – 1996, 1997, 1994
  2. Honda Civic (43,936) – 1998, 1997, 2000
  3. Ford F-Series full size pickup (28,680) – 2006, 2005, 2004
  4. Chevrolet full size pickup (23,196) – 1997, 2003, 2004
  5. Toyota Camry (14,605) – 1991
  6. Dodge Ram full size pickup (11,075) – 2004, 2001, 2005
  7. Dodge Caravan (10,483) – 2000, 2002, 2003
  8. Nissan Altima (9,210) – 2013
  9. Acura Integra (6,902) – 1994, 1995
  10. Nissan Maxima (6,586) – 1996

OK, so not much to see here. There is very common, popular cars. There are a lot of them on the road so statistically they would have higher theft rates.

Top 10 Vehicles that Police Fail to Recover

Most of the time stolen vehicles are recovered. However, there are some that are never reunited with their owners. According to the NICB 12 percent of 2013 model year vehicles stolen between January 2012 and June 2014 were not recovered. Here they are by make and model, total thefts, and number of unrecovered vehicles.

  1. Ford F-Series – 1,290 total thefts – 206 unrecovered (16%)
  2. Chevrolet Silverado – 613 total thefts – 147 unrecovered (24%)
  3. Nissan Altima – 1,386 total thefts – 111 unrecovered (8%)
  4. Chevrolet Camaro – 501 total thefts – 107 unrecovered (21%)
  5. Toyota Corolla – 1,033 total thefts – 103 unrecovered (10%)
  6. Dodge Charger – 798 total thefts – 89 unrecovered (11%)
  7. Dodge Ram – 379 total thefts – 89 unrecovered (24%)
  8. Hyundai Elantra – 930 total thefts – 80 unrecovered (9%)
  9. Toyota Camry – 730 total thefts – 78 unrecovered (11%)
  10. Ford Fusion – 1,121 total thefts – 76 unrecovered (7%)

Did some of these surprise you? Still, these are fairly common vehicles. Now let’s get to the good stuff.

Top 10 Most Stolen Luxury Vehicles

These numbers come from another report by the NICB listing the top luxury vehicles that were stolen between 2009 and 2012. Apparently, criminals have a penchant for German luxury vehicles. Let’s take a look at the make and model of these cars as well as how many were stolen.

  1. Mercedes-Benz C Class – 485
  2. BMW 3 Series – 471
  3. Infiniti G Series – 405
  4. Mercedes-Benz E Class – 381
  5. Cadillac CTS – 326
  6. BMW 5 Series – 256
  7. Lincoln MKZ – 226
  8. Acura TSX – 190
  9. Mercedes-Benz S Class – 163
  10. Lexus IS – 117
